Shelter
The Kids In Distress emergency shelter is a 24-hour safe refuge for children between the ages of birth and 15 who are victims of abuse and neglect. The shelter is licensed to serve up to 24 children at any given time.
Admission Criteria: Children admitted to the shelter are between the ages of birth and 15, and are referred to us by ChildNet in Broward County and Child and Family Connections in Palm Beach County. The children are either suffering from the harm of physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse and neglect (medical neglect or abandonment), or are in a foster home and have medical or behavior issues that cannot be adequately dealt with in that home. We do not like to turn any child away, but sometimes, children with severe physical, medical or cognitive handicaps cannot be admitted, simply because their complex needs cannot be met in the shelter.
